New Director for Vancouver BC Public Library

VANCOUVER, CANADA – For only the 11th time in its long history, Vancouver Public Library is getting a new head librarian.

On Monday the library announced Sandra Singh will take over from Paul Whitney as head of a sprawling system that includes the Coliseumesque-Central Library, 20 neighborhood branches, the virtual library at vpl.ca and more than 800 staff.

Singh is currently the Director of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia. But she has also worked at VPL in senior management positions, first overseeing east side library branches and leading the Library’s computer systems department.

She also led a national project called Working Together which pioneered community development techniques to plan and implement services with socially excluded communities.

Singh takes over just as the city wrestles with how to close a $20.6 million gap in its operating budget. Last year the city demanded the library cut $1.5 million in services as it faced similar budget problems, but cut that amount down to just over $650,000 in the face of a fierce public backlash.
