New Britain Public Library Sponsors Children’s War

Anonymous Patron writes “The New Britain Public Library, a Library Connection consortium member, sponsors a water gun and baloon fight on the library lawn. The Connecticut city library where English is not the primary language spoken in school children’s homes has found a way to bridge the communication gap. The New Britain Herald reports“

    While one Connecticut city library engages its youth in a water war, a neighboring city Middletown encourgages more creative activity. The city of Middletown and its Russell Library are sponsoring a writing contest with a patriot theme and offers three $50 gift certificates for winners. More details.

    It’s summer for gosh sakes…
    and it’s not like this is a regular program. It’s not even listed on their website.

    Give ’em a break, they’re doing Summer Reading. 🙂

    It can be hard to write (and very hard to read) essays by non English speaking kids. I think the water fight was a great idea. And the patriotic theme for a writing contest sounds just a little too much like school to me.

    teens love this!
    Teens love doing these active type events. I’m going to suggest it to our local public library. It’s just something a little different than what a library is “expected” to provide. You really have to think outside the box somewhat when working with teens. And summer is great time to do it.

    War is an enriching activity
    Even if it was only a play war and probably cost the library about $200, no doubt it was an enriching activity. WAR BUILDS CHARACTER.

    But wouldn’t been more appropriate for the city’s recreation department to have sponsored the activity?
