Readers of the Desoto Times are being polled about the possible use of metal detectors in the library after a gun was found stashed behind the First Regional Library in Hernando Mississippi, a place described by the library’s executive director as “a nice peaceful town’.
Catherine Nathan said she was reluctant to consider the installation of metal detectors, but would leave that decision up to the Board of Trustees. Said Nathan “We didn’t think the day would come when we would talk about guns and the library. I hired a security guard this past year and we have security cameras outside the library. Now it does pull us up short”.
Hang on
A kid has a gun ‘outside’ the library, and they’re talking about getting metal detectors ‘in’ the library?
Are they thinking of bulletproof glass for the windows too? Makes just as much sense.
Threats against staff
At least they are taking threats, or possible threats, against library staff seriously. Where I’m from, concern for the staff is unheard of.
I just like how the gun was stolen from a city employee’s vehicle. And he didn’t even realize it had been stolen!
Waste of money
Since it is legal to carry a wepon in a library in Mississippi, in fact Mississippi is one of the few open carry states, however most people who wish to carry a handgun do not wish to advertise that they have a tool for their self defense and prefer to carry a concealed weapon.
Mississippi state law allows for the carrying of a concealed weapon legally in a library so what possible good could metal detectors do?
Perhaps the librarians would like to carry concealed weapons as well, a right guaranteed under the Mississippi and Federal Constitutions.
Guns are not the problem, criminals are the problem.
open carry of handguns
MS is not one of few states allowing open carry – all but 6 states allow opn carry.
One of the few?
Just any FYI, there are 44 states that have open carry of firearms in one manner or another. As far as the gun stashed behind the library, maybe someone was afraid to bring it in, and forgot about it.
Really, how many stories do you read in the newspaper, or see on TV about libraries being shot up?
11 I think,…
There are 11 states that are open carry without the need to get a ‘license’ from the government to permit you to exercise your rights guaranteed under the Constitution. Most states that allow concealed weapon permit holders to openly carry a gun, also allow open carry, Florida is one notable exception (especially since I live there).
However I don’t personally open carry, I don’t want anyone to see my gun, it is none of their business. I also don’t want to be confused with a cop, and be drawn into arguments between whackjobs that I would much rather avoid.
I completely support the Pink Pistols, and I particularly enjoyed their Amicus brief in the Heller case. It is nice to see that someone besides myself seeks to advance the principles of the free market, individual responsibility and non-interference by government in the private lives of all citizens..
The right to defend one’s person and family is a human right, and a right guaranteed by our Constitution.
