MPLS’s Hadley on funding cutbacks

Minneapolis Public Library director Katherine G. Hadley had an op-ed piece in yesterday’s Star Tribune re: the impact of last year’s budget cuts:

Since last fall, when the Library Board faced drastic budget reductions for 2004, hundreds of people in Minneapolis and beyond have written to tell us how important the Minneapolis Public Library is to their family, their business, their classroom. Many have also given generously out of their own pockets to help the library recover from the cutbacks in state funding that have forced huge reductions in staffing and hours of service . . .

In both the public and private sectors, the new fiscal reality demands new ways of doing business — often doing more with fewer resources. As well, the world of information is rapidly evolving. The public library is at the nexus of these intersecting trends.
