More than 100 UK libraries ‘threatened with closure’

More than 100 libraries across the UK are threatened with closure, culture minister David Lammy confirmed today.

But Mr Lammy said that this only made up a small percentage of the 3,500 libraries in the country, and that counties like Northamptonshire and Surrey had recently reversed plans to shut library doors.

Mr Lammy wrote to councils in January to urge them to keep libraries open, at a time when only 50 were thought to be under threat.
