More Parents shocked by online images

Yet Another Article, this time from Oklahoma, about a local mom who says she was shocked when her children were recently exposed to inappropriate images being viewed by computer users at the Ardmore Public Library. This is a good long article that looks at the issue rather well.

“Now, I’m not trying to cause trouble. I think what people look at on computers in their own homes is their business. But when they do it in public places and my children are exposed, then it’s my business,” she said.

    Deja Vu
    The filtering and public use of library computers keeps coming up again and again. The library is a tax funded facility which is used by all members of the public. Families who pay those taxes have a right to safety for the money they pay. Why is this issue so difficult to solve? It keeps getting confused with first amendment issues. I am not a lawyer but I think even as a taxpayer people are entitled to services for their money. If images can appear on a screen in full view of everyone including children, then soemone’s rights are being compromised. Suppose a library wanted to have an exhibit of “Porn Through the Centuries” and had explicit pictures to describe this “art” form. Would that be proper and acceptable? I suppose that some would say yes. Public money needs to reflect public consensus not proving agenda issues. Filtering is not evil, just considerate and understanding. Shouldn’t people who promote care and sensitivity in some issues show the same on other issues as well?

    And aren’t the people who look at porn on public computers are taxpayers too? (While some may not be, I’m sure there are parents who aren’t as well.) So if their money is going to pay for providing comps and net access, why shouldn’t they be allowed to look at whatever they want? So why do the kids’ rights outweigh the adults? The kids don’t pay taxes…although their parents assumedly, do. You don’t even really have to drag the first amendment into it.

    Perhaps instead of a children’s room their should be an adult’s room for computers?

    Porn through centuries; I’d go and see that. But I think “Erotica Through the Centuries” is much nicer sounding.
