Mississippi Librarian Finds a Rare Bird

Librarian Mary Stevens of Jackson MS was the proud partner of birder Don McKee recently as they spotted the very first nesting roseate spoonbill raising its young near Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge southwest of Yazoo City. The two were kayaking, attempting to find the 300th different bird in a year. Such birds have been previously spotted in MS, but have never been seen nesting, so this was a first for the state.

The South Mississippi Sun Herald reports on the eureka moment when Mary and Don found the two foot long bird after first thinking that the distant splash of crimson color was a wildflower. Then it moved.

Take it from the birdie, spotting such an unusual visitor can be a fantastic experience.
