Anonymous Patron writes “The Monitor – McAllen, Texas reports South Texas College’s head librarian resigned in May, but the school can’t find a replacement even after four months of searching and a bevy of help wanted ads in state and national job banks.
In fact, the college has three other key librarian positions open, including one for a head librarian, at its Pecan campus, that still needs to be filled. It has only received two applications for that position, said Armendina SesÃn, STC’s library director.”

Here’s the actual job posting:
$40k a year, 5 years of experience required, no relocation benefits would seem to me to be the problem.
Re:The posting…
All of the above reasons, plus you’re down in the middle of nowhere living in a border town.
Re:The posting…
Not to mention that all the openings for librarians appear to be listed under “Professional Support Staff” instead of “Faculty Positions”. There are plenty of community colleges in Texas where most professional librarians are faculty; why not STC? McAllen’s not a bad place to live; I lived there myself for about seven years. But this posting is clearly out of whack with the market.
