Mayor and Police Take Over RI Library

mdoneil writes “From the Pawtucket Times: Central Falls, RI library was locked by police during an investigation into their computer system. Complicating the matter is a lack of a warrant and the fact that the library is a private library (although the collection is owned by the city). Police Chief Thomas Wilson said he has no idea what is going on."

    No idea?
    Someone who doesn’t have any idea what his organization is doing, deserves to be fired. And at least for business CEOs, put in jail/fined for what their organization is doing.

    “Right now, the mayor is directing the investigation, so I really don’t have an answer to what is going on,” Wilson said. “So far I’ve been bypassed.”

    And the mayor says it’s a police matter.

    Wow, does this seem shady to anyone else? If the chief of police doesn’t know what is going on… who does?
    I’m surprised that the mayor or the police chief didn’t get a search warrant, even as a c.y.a manuver.

    Independant third party time. Wait – does that mean the Mayor and the Police chief need to sit down together talk this over a few drinks? No – call in the provincial/state police.

    That’s because the mayor views his police chief as a political enemy – he tried to get the chief fired as soon as he took office.

    Wilson and the mayor have been at odds since Moreau told reporters he planned to fire the chief, who was chosen by the previous mayor, Lee Matthews, in favor of a police officer who is a city resident. Wilson sued the chief in federal court to keep his job. Last month, the mayor suspended the chief for two days saying he violated a vacation ordinance. Wilson will serve his suspension today and tomorrow.

    “We are now contending that not only is the mayor harassing the chief by suspending him and doing a series of other things, he is also attempting to usurp control of the Police Department for political purposes,” said Leon Blais, Wilson’s lawyer.
