Man Arested on 5-year-old Overdue Book Charge

This is almost laughable because of the guy\’s last name… In today\’s St. Petersburg Times there\’s a story about another patron who has been arrested for failing to return overdue library books… The problem is that it took five years to catch him. It seems Kevin Crook was arrested during a routine traffic stop when the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over by Clearwater, FL police. 5 years earlier, Crook had ignored an order to appear in court on overdue library book charges. \”Crook spent the night in jail before a judge released him. He faces charges under a 1996 ordinance allowing libraries to prosecute the worst scofflaws in county court, where they face a $500 fine per book. The law was intended to reduce the number of lost and stolen books. But librarians in Pinellas County said Thursday they seldom pursue the law because of the bad publicity after an arrest.\” Read the Rest.
