The Syracuse Post-Standard Looks At dudes in the library. Mirroring the trend of elementary classroom teachers, there are few men in the library science field, and even fewer choose to work in schools.
In six Central New York counties, only 10 of the 51 school districts surveyed have men working in their libraries. That’s just 13 men out of more than 300 school librarians in the region, a number that will drop to 12 when Lykling moves to Boston at the end of the school year.
“Male Librarians Create New Stereotypes”
Male Librarian Stereotypes:
1. Gay.
2. Facial Hair on any dude over 40.
3. Out of fashion shirts.
4. Spend too much money on books about guns, cars, military history, sex and knives.
5. Gay.
Stereotypes
I was trying to think of “male librarian stereotypes” when I posted this, and about all I can come up with was even less than GAC.
But then I got to thinking, does anyone out side of us librarians have any “male” stereotypes? I asked a few people and they all had the same response, “librarians are women” (and yes, they all knew I was a librarian, and presumably they all know I’m a man).

Fantastic, I will fit right in at grad school next year. Oh wait, except for #’s 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Give it time my friend, give it time…
I’m gonna have to go with gay here…
…not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Re:Stereotypes
I think perhaps the author’s article would’ve been better off saying that he was breaking “librarian stereotypes”–the biggest of which, as Blake can attest to, is that all librarians are women.
But male librarian stereotypes? Biggest one I know of is the gay thing. Of course, half the guys in my LT course were gay. (Okay, okay, so we only had TWO guys in the class. Details, details.) And I remember our instructor mentioning that particular stereotype to us. Although I’ve known more straight male librarians/LTs than gay.

1. Director or 2. Computer Person
Re:Stereotypes
I don’t have much interest in Star Trek. But, just because I have a finer understanding of the importance of the Star Wars universe, and do not appreciate someone who makes light of a Jedi, does not mean I am a “geek”.
I am a director though. (Not gay)
