Interesting Move By The city of Springfield (IL): The city of Springfield could announce within days a plan for where the Lincoln Library homeless people can keep their possessions, Mayor Tim Davlin said Tuesday. He said he doesn’t anticipate any changes to security around the library, even if the number of homeless people staying there goes down.
A varying group amounting to dozen or so homeless people frequent the library, sleeping under its overhang at night and leaving their bedrolls and other possessions on planters along the building’s north side during the day.
Brilliant
I can’t store a bag in a locker at the airport because we are scared to death of terrorists. I have to lug my suitcase around when changing airlines in JFK with a four over layover but the bums in the Land of Lincoln can have a locker to store their crap while they go inside and stink the place up.
Not that I don’t have at least a small bit of compassion, but the library is not a social services agency or homeless center it is a library.
Mmm
Not that it’s an overall solution to the problem of course but if they are leaving their stuff beside the library, has the city thought of just throwing them away every day? That might stop them hanging about.
Lockers for Lincoln
Hope they consider that they will also need air fresheners.
I feel sorry for the library staff
Will these lockers have locks? If so, who’s going to pass them out or assign combinations? If there are more homeless people who want lockers than there are lockers, (and there will be, once word gets out), who decides who gets a locker and who doesn’t? Who’s responsible if the lockers are vandalized or broken into?
This isn’t going to solve any of their problems – it’s just going to create a lot more.
