As an Amityville man and his wife took in their mail last Saturday, they were surprised to discover an overdue notice from the local public library. But when they opened the envelope, they were astounded by the amount they had been fined — $9,220,018.97.
“Maybe we won $9 million,” Roger Washington said jokingly to his wife, Celestine. “Because it’s not possible to pay that for a book.”
