Library theft and police involvement

JET writes ” This One is on the problems faced by all Publics on shrinkage. “It’s usually not an outright theft, but rather overdue books that are never returned,” said Circulation Director Irma Keller. “We send out several letters, but when they go unanswered, we have to turn the matter over to the police.”

    Stop playing nice…
    It is theft, theft by conversion. When you rent a car and don’t bring it back they charge you with theft, when you rent a movie and don’t bring it back they bill you for it.

    When you take out a library book and don’t bring it back librarians give you the benefit of the doubt.

    Set a policy, after several weeks or months, declare the book to be stolen. Then call the cops.
