Library tax cut fails at polls

bibliotrope writes “The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that a referendum to cut the funding for Norwin Public Library (where Bibliotrope grew up 🙂 ) failed in the May 17 primary. The move would have reversed a 2000 increase (from 0.2 mills to 1.2 mills) in the library tax for the Norwin library, which serves the municipalities of Irwin, North Irwin and North Huntingdon in Westmoreland County, about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. Such a cut would have inflicted serious damage to the library’s budget and possibly resulted in the closure of the library. However, the referendum was defeated by almost 3,000 votes. Mary Lou Patterson, leader of the taxpayer organization behind the referendum said, “What shocks me is the 2-to-1 margin we lost by,” and that her group will try to get a similar measure put on the November ballot.”
