Library staff are unsung heroes

Anonymous Patron writes “A Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Column By Greg Hill director of Fairbanks North Star Borough libraries. The quiet, orderly library you enjoy is maintained by an unsung and courageous staff. The pleasant reference librarian who helped you find just the right book, wiring diagram, tax form or pharmaceutical counter-indication has also in the last month faced down burly drunks, comforted lost children and defused confrontations between angry teenagers. They must be bouncers, counselors and social workers, as well as skilled researchers. They often put themselves in scary and uncomfortable situations to protect everyone else’s library experience.”
