One can only wonder…
“What the hell were they thinking?!?!?”
Re:One can only wonder… 🙂
Uhhh… they weren’t?
Re:One can only wonder…
I don’t have an opinion on it but in terms of what they are thinking… well, the article mentions a policy prohibiting ‘for-profits’ which is what we have regarding our meeting rooms. I believe we also have rules on some summer programs that parents have to sign-up their own kids and be there with them.
And its not too hard to imagine some daycares relying on the library to do their programming for them. Factor in the limited resources a lot of libraries have and some Librarians may not feel very friendly to the people who are making money off the library’s work.
Re:One can only wonder…
That’s true… I can understand a concern about “daycares relying on the library to do their programming,” but, as the article points out, with the modern workplace, it’s very difficult for working parents to get invovled in a lot of library programs.
I know that when I’ve looked at programming for children (especially over the summer), the events are almost entirely mid-day, mid-week, which makes it impossible for anybody but the daycare/daycamp provider to be the ones that involve the students.
Re:One can only wonder…
I used to be a lifeguard a long time ago and the policy may have been a reaction against certain daycares dropping off a busload of kids and driving off and leaving the children without any supervision and expecting the employees to look after them. Those kind of daycares are few and far between but they do exist.
Also, if a child wanted to check out a copy of Heather and Her Two Mommies while at the library with a daycare provider, what would happen if a parent objected? Who would they turn to to complain – the daycare or the library?
Their answer was off base but you can see why the possible problems needed to be thought over.
