Oakland Press – Pontiac,MI, Reports In 2001, Ferndale’s City Council took a bold stand and voted to ban guns from its city buildings.
The move – called groundbreaking by some – spurred other cities to take similar stands. Soon Detroit, East Lansing, Saline and others had passed their own bans.
A gun rights group, Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners, took Ferndale to court.
State law preempts local regulation…
State law preempts local regulation here in Florida as well. A county south of me prohibits firearms in their library, however that is unenforceable as the state explicitly reserves to itself the regulation of firearms.
It seems that leaving up a sign that is unenforceable causes more harm than good. Now will the armed thugs wait outside the library feeling that everyone exiting will be unarmed.
In the intrest of full disclosure, I carry a gun and I have the appropriate permits to do so. It is legal for me to carry one at my place of employment and since I work for a governmental body they are not allowed to make rules prohibiting me from carrying a firearm at work. (I am not going to disclose if I indeed do carry a firearm at work as the law requires that I conceal it and telling people if I am or am not is not in keeping with the spirit of the law.)
That said, the people who you should worry about are not those permitted to legally carry a gun, but those who ignore the laws and carry a gun. Those are the people likely to do you harm, the criminals not the law abiding gun owner.
What matters…
What matters is not how he feels, but what is the law. The public is very supportive of the concealed carry law, and that is the only opinion that should matter.
Having worked quite some time at a public library reference desk, I can honestly say that I would not be concerned, at all, about law abiding citizens carrying firearms, concealed or not. What did concern me greatly was the possibility of the criminal element of society coming in with a handgun, and the public and myself being unable to defend ourselves adequately against the threat.
The small red panic button does nothing to stop the armed criminal.
Gun Library
In Alabama, things are apparently very different. If you want to buy a gun, you go to your local library.
Re:Gun Library
Or should I say West Virginia. I should have read closer.
Re:Gun Library
I think all Cabelas have them.
Imagine the excellent discounts
Imagine the great discounts you could get if your library actually sold guns. You could probably gets FFL transfers for free too.
Nonsense
A silly law to solve a problem that does not exist.

Yes. And if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. That makes it very easy to identify outlaws who may do harm and allows for quick action: Someone has a gun in the library, call the cops.
Re:State law preempts local regulation…
Someone has a gun it the library…. maybe it is the cops?
Your argument about someone who may do harm could be used to outlaw anything, kitchen knives to vacuum cleaners, they all may do harm. Where do you draw the line, just guns because they are loud?
I’m never going to convince people who are adamantly opposed to guns of their lawful use, then again I’m not trying to force them to carry a gun. Unlike many anti-gun groups that are trying to take mine away.
Re:Nonsense
Oh, you’ll not fit in well around here.
Later on we can show you where the conservatives meet, and the secret handshake.
