Libraries caught in anti-Free-Municipal-WiFi crossfire?

Porch Geese writes “Many municipalities around the USA are exploring offering free WiFi access. Needless to say, broadband companies, that have been slow to offer a comparable service, are concerned about competition with their DSL/cable/T-1 services. They’ve got their lobbyists at work getting bills going in cities across the country to make it illegal, or at least extra cumbersome, for municipalities to offer communication services. Some of those bills are perhaps too wide in their scopes. One bill under consideration in the Texas legislature may be so broad that it could ban even free Wi-Fi access in public libraries and parks.”
