Librarians must be lobbyists, Mills says

The Daily Freeman Reports NY Education Commissioner Richard Mills was the featured speaker at the New Century Library Leadership meeting Monday morning at the Mount St. Alphonsus Retreat Center.

Mills said librarians must get their communities involved to get more support for libraries from the state Legislature. Because libraries are used by business, medical and educational communities, he said, they should be a good source of advocates. Parents of school-aged children are another source, he said, noting that more than one million children statewide participated in summer reading programs at public libraries this year.
