Librarians and FBI official debate the Patriot Act

The Reader’s Shop writes “mailtribune.com reports Librarians and Robert Jordan, FBI special agent, met at Southern Oregon University for a forum called “Libraries, Censorship and the Internet in the Era of the Patriot Act. Participants discussed the extent of the laws provisions and the likelihood that “investigative incursions into private records are likely to get much more aggressive if there’s another big terrorist attack”. Gag rules included in the bill were also discussed as well as other topics including exactly what kind of authority FBI agents need to access library records.”

    Good debate, any Newzters attend?
    This article is interesting in that it seems to show people on both sides of the USAPA issue as reasonable people with legitimate concerns.

    I was particularly impressed with Agent Jordan’s admission that the FBI overstepped its bounds in the 1960s. That’s something many of his current superiors and the former AG refused to do.

    Obviously, given AG Gonzales prior advocacy of absolute Presidential power, I don’t share Agent Jordan’s optimism that”it’s hard to believe the Attorney General would sign something offensive to the Constitution.” As far as I’m concerned, he already did so as White House Counsel.

    My only complaint about the article (NOT with those who submitted/posted it) is its lack of depth. Were we fortunate enough to have a reader/author here at LISNews attend the forum? Do you have more details?

    Ideally, a transcript would be even better.
