Librarian wins wrongful dismissal suit

Fang-Face writes “ Mo. librarian prevails in quest not to work on Sabbath says the headline of an article posted at First Amendment Center. Connie Rehm said she was fired for refusing to work on Sundays, and and last month she was reinstated on the orders of a federal judge.”

    I say good for Rehm for sticking to her guns. I don’t know what the staffing situation is at that library (which is really the only reason why I couldn’t see immediately honoring her request in the first place), but the library spent more on the lawsuit than it would have cost to find part time help one day a week to just give her the day off.

    Actually, I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist… Christian, yes… But I have to agree with Anonymous Patron. Sunday isn’t the Sabbath. 😉 Then again, I’m a bad SDA, and always worked it.

    Now, of course, I’m a Pastafarian, and I take Talk Like A Pirate Day off.

    This case happens to have involved a Christian, but the principle of religious liberty applies to everybody–it’s quite routine in many workplaces for employees to help each other observe their own religious obligations, whether that’s Orthodox Jews and Saturday night, Muslims and Fridays, or Christians and Sundays. As a library school professor who is a practicing Lutheran (former Catholic and Episcopalian) but who has Jewish Holocaust survivors in my immediate family tree, I try to be sensitive to this sort of thing. I have been approached about class absences on religious holidays by students from both Reform and Orthodox Jewish backgrounds, as well as by Seventh-Day Adventists. I don’t see any reason why the libraries these students go into should be less accommodating than I have been.
