Jeff Gunderson, 55, of Greenbrae commutes to San Francisco where he works as a librarian and swims in the bay before work, after work or at lunch.
Why: Bay swimming is particularly exhilarating – experiencing all of the elements: the cold (which can dip to the upper 40s in the winter), the ebb and flood tides, the wind, the swell, boats, debris and creatures.
CRAZY PERSON
My mom is a native San Franciscan and told me nobody swims in the bay back when I was a naive child of the Midwest who thought all water was for swimming. I stick to that because I don’t have a death wish and find swimming in garbage unpleasant. Of, course the lakes and rivers here in St. Paul aren’t so clean either.
