Librarian One Of The Five Most Unpopular Jobs

Although The Bureau of Labor Statistics says there will not be a generalized labor shortage in the US, certain jobs will experience a shortage of qualified workers.

In addition to all the librarians expected to retire within the next decade, interest in the profession is waning among younger workers, according to the BLS. The situation is particularly dire for colleges and universities, which report the greatest difficulty in hiring librarians due to lower pay.

    No wonder. We won’t even push the job ourselves
    You would be hard pressed to find a library school in North America these days. My alma mater went from being the Faculty of Library Science to the Faculty of Information Studies. If we feel that libraries and librarians are so old fashioned that we have to disguise what we are, no wonder no one wants to join us.

    Starting Salary
    This article reported that the BLS reports starting salaries at $39,000. During my recent job search the averages were more like the $32,000 – $37,000 range, and that was accross a wide range of employers. I question the validity of the BLS’s statistics.

    I continue to wonder about the comments that college and university libraries are in such dire straits. How is it then that it is so difficult to find an entry-level academic job? I know many friends from library school (class of 02) that struggled to find academic jobs. The requirement for most entry-level jobs of a 2nd masters degree has all but eliminated most academic jobs for many young librarians. When we begin to see an abundance of entry-level professional positions will I then believe that there is a shortage of librarians.
