Librarian Inspires Prisoners, Kids to Read

Susan Oaks, a librarian with Araphoe (CO) County libraries works with incarcerated people and their children through a program she developed five years ago called “Begin With Books.” The program makes it easy for inmates to read to their children, via phone calls, taped readings, or during visits. While we’ve posted a few stories like this before, what was notable and alarming about this one is a quote from Oaks: “Some states are now using the statistics of non-reading third graders to determine their future prison population….”
Oaks is doing good work…no wonder she was selected as one of the New York Times Librarians of the Year
