In Urbandale, Iowa librarian Lisa Bonifas was fired for refusing to tell her employer how much she weighed.
Nevermind the fact that she’s had good performance reviews and that there’s no weight requirement for her position. That didn’t matter, according to a Des Moines Register column.
name, DOB,.. they’re 1 step from total identity theft.
I don’t even want my last name on my ID. But here at Walmart, that’s not a problem.
nah
I would have just lied, not like they’d care or check these things, especially if it is HR asking.
I smell lawsuit!
I smell lawsuit!
She wasn’t a librarian. Not
She wasn’t a librarian. Not that it really matters whether someone is a librarian or a clerk, but the word “librarian” is all over your post, and is inaccurate.
Language
The language used on LISNEWS is an excerpt of the language used in the article linked to. Take up your complaint with KTAR. Can you provide a cite or link to a better article? If not then this article will have to do.
Your words
“She wasn’t a librarian. Not that it really matters whether someone is a librarian or a clerk, but the word “librarian” is all over your post, and is inaccurate.”
Definition of anal: Someone who brings up a point that doesn’t really matter.
http://www.inc.com/news/artic
http://www.inc.com/news/articles/2010/08/employee-fired-for-refusing-to-reveal-weight.html – Actually has more information about the whole thing than KTAR. And, I think, a more reputable source.
Irony
The article you point to mentions the tv news station story that LISNEWS linked to several times.
Irony 2
The story at KTAR.com links to the same link that you provided.
Irony 3
>>Actually has more information about the whole thing than KTAR. And, I think, a more reputable source.
I went back and reread the KTAR story carefully. The story is actually a series of quotes that are attributed to the Des Moines Register. At the end of the piece that have a link to the Des Moines Register. The Des Moines Register seemingly has some connection with Inc. because that link goes to the article you mention: http://www.inc.com/news/articles/2010/08/employee-fired-for-refusing-to-reveal-weight.html
So what is not reputable about the KTAR story? The fact that they say “In Urbandale, Iowa librarian Lisa Bonifas was fired for refusing to tell her employer how much she weighed.” when in actuality according to the article you mention she is “a public library circulation clerk in the city of Urbandale, Iowa. ”
Do we know that she does not have her MLS? She could be a circulation clerk and have her MLS. You can quibble with it but a valid definition of librarian can be someone that works in a library doing library work. Circulation clerk would fit that bill.
What we really have here is a super anal librarian seeing the fact that a clerk (who may have an MLS) was called a librarian.
Do you know the difference between a library clerk and a librarian? The clerk actually does some work.
If you look at the Inc
If you look at the Inc article, it states “Now she’s hunting for a job in the insurance industry, where she worked before joining the library two years ago.” Does that mean she’s not a librarian? No. But it seems unlikely.
The Des Moines Register article about it (which is actually an opinion piece) is here: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20107300330 The fact that KTAR didn’t even link to the story they are quoting from does, in my mind at least, make the KTAR piece, if not less reputable, less well-researched than the Inc. piece.
Would I expect a radio station to determine whether or not someone who works in a library is a librarian? No. Would I expect a site for “Librarian And Information Science News” to know the difference? Yes. And I would hope that, once someone attempted to help correct misinformation that’s being spread around, the response would be less hostile.
But clearly this is devolving into a discussion of how librarians don’t do any work and having a master’s degree is meaningless because if you can shelve books and scan barcodes and work in a library, clearly you’re doing “library work” and it’s valid to call you a librarian on a library news website. As that is the case, I will bow out of the discussion.
Documentation of MLS
So every time there is an article that mentions a librarian LISNEWS should not post the story until they have confirmed with written documentation that the person being discussed has an MLS. Problem solved.
If?
If the radio/tv/newspaper articles don’t report this woman’s specific qualifications and degrees, how is LISNews to determine that?
Real irony
Thereby demonstrating the fallibility, and thus uselessness, of the semantic web in its current form.
