Librarian Digs His Hole

A Normal, IL elementary school librarian followed through on his promise to students who sent him postcards over the summer by digging a hole, reports the Pantagraph. Every summer, Grove Elementary School librarian Tim Nave challenges his students to send him postcards from their vacation destinations. He promises to do something in return. One year, he shaved his legs, another he sang the school song from the school’s roof.

This year he pledged to dig a 5 foot deep hole, in which he planted a tree for the school’s butterfly garden. Taking a cue from the Louis Sachar book, Holes, Nave placed an onion, a jug of water and a copy of the book next to the hole. Heavy rains kept Nave a half-foot shy of his goal.
