LexisNexis single user pricing

At about $3/story, now it’s easier than ever for the individual and small business to fork over money to Reed Elsevier! (Actually, this is a suprisingly non-binding contract for Elsevier. I wonder what the catch is.)”

    example of binding contract?
    excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain the concept of a Reed Elsivier binding contract? Something more than you fork over x dollars per k timeperiod for i number of documents accessed?

    I seem to recall, back in the dark ages of 2000-2001 when I worked at a law firm library, individuals could use LexisNexis with single user pricing. A lot of private detectives and freelance researchers used it that way. Of course, you couldn’t search for free back then and purchase articles, but it *was* possible to use Lexis as an individual. Of course, that was back before it was all online and you had to use the funky proprietary software and remember the keyed commands. And it was probably snowing and I had to walk uphill both ways just to get to my computer…

    I actually recommended LN ala carte to a patron today who had graduated but still wanted to get info from Lexis-Nexis, and wasn’t willing to come in. She was pretty psyched that she could search for free and buy the articles she wanted from home, even though I told her she was welcome to come into the library and do it for free from our machines. Oh well, at least she asked a librarian for info somewhere along the way!
