Seems some Texans want the Bible to be taught as an elective subject in high schools in the state; Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, has offered a bill to the legislature to that effect.
From the AP article: “The idea of teaching the Bible in school seems to be undergoing a revival nationally. Two literature classes on the Bible are included on a list of state-approved courses that Georgia public schools could choose to offer beginning next year. Some critics say it would be the first state to take an explicit stance endorsing and funding biblical teachings. The Texas measure goes a step farther; requiring school districts to make such courses available, advocates on both sides agreed.”
In the interests of (Ha!) “Fair and Balanced”
What are they going to teach it against for the sake of comparison? The Bhagavad Vita? The Q’uran? The Talmud?
Or, as I suspect, just nothing at all?
Should I also wonder if they are going to teach how America’s elected parasites go out of their way to act in violation to the teachings of Christ because the intolerance preached in the Old Testament is more palatable to their prejudices? Or should I just take it for granted that they won’t and save myself the time and energy?
Gee. Sounds like you’ll be fighting
the Bible Wars all over again.
Require …elective?
OK it will not be a required class, however it is still nonsense unless there are other classes on other great books. Or perhaps they could simply offer comparative religion as an elective.
Of course these bills most often die before they ever see the light of day. It strokes the egos of the X (no pun intended) religion is the only true religion so teach X book. It keeps the whacko religious nuts happy because at least their representative ‘tried’ but for the heathens.
Legislative onanism.
If you’re going to use it as a textbook
You also have to be able to be critical of everything about it.
Somehow I don’t think they’ll be doing much of that in the classes.
