Latest conference scoop

LJ is reporting the latest from the home office up in Chicago about registration, program and vendor stats for the ALA’s annual conference in Toronto. At the end of last week, registration was at 9730, down 130 from the previous week. This number also includes folks from the Canadian Library Association (CLA). About 5% of division meetings and programs have been cancelled, but all major programs are still on.

Keith Michael Fiels, Executive Director of ALA has stated that the conference will be cancelled if the WHO issues another travel advisory (which seems unlikely, as of this writing). There is more information on SARS on the ALA website, and Fiels has pledged that a physician will be on-site at the conference, and that there will be a booth where attendees can get the latest info, including a list of “safe” hospitals.

Still waiting for the announcement that midwestern conferees with pet prairiedogs consider staying home and keeping their monkeypox to themselves.
