Somebody writes “Koha with Class Initiative: LibLime Free ILS for library school classrooms
LibLime’s Koha with Class Initiative is designed to give library students hands-on experience with library automation software and open source.
Building on the success of a pilot program at Texas Woman’s University in 2006, Koha with Class provides library school classrooms with a hosted installation of Koha, the most advanced open-source integrated library automation system, free of charge.”
nothing new
TLC was doing this at my library school almost 11 years ago. Slight difference it wasn’t hosted but they did provide a server and maintained it remotely. We used it in class work and had access to their support department. I believe that other ILS’s routinely do this as well, or they used too. It was invaluble in learning an ILS. I’ve played with Koha and I can say it’s would probably work as well as anything in a learning environment. I do think it needs to be called what it really is: MARKETING.
I posted this yesterday evening but it has never shown up. Apologies if this duplicates.
sarcastic response to nothing new
Ahh, so you mean that Sirsi allowed students to view their code, make changes to suit their needs, and interact with a global community of real users of their software? Cool!
Seriously, this is new, and yes, it’s marketing, but if that’s what it takes to get libraries to adopt open source, kudos to LibLime! Marketing is just what OSS needs.
