Certain Omaha police cruisers soon will be equipped with a new crime-fighting tool: children’s books.
The REACH a Child organization is donating 250 books to the Police Department, ranging from sports to fantasy to history.
The idea, said coordinator Steve Countryman, is for first responders to have books readily available to give to stressed children they encounter.
For now, he said, red backpacks containing an assortment of reading material will go to Omaha officers working with Project Harmony, a child advocacy center that investigates child abuse and sexual assault.

Things change
Once upon a time the guideline for packing for an extended emergency response effort was to have at least one stuffed animal with you. A stuffed animal plus a book might be very effective. This is culturally dependent so mileage will vary.
