Jamming Tags Block RFID Scanners

    This is worrying.

    RFID in libraries would be used as a part of collection security, much like the systems currently in place. If someone scrambled the RFID tag, it would be easy for people to walk out with books, videos, CDs, and other library property. The same goes for commercial merchandise in stores.

    I understand the privacy concerns people have about RFID. However, if these blocker tags become widely available and legal, you can bet that few libraries will be replacing their current security and barcode systems with RFID.

    Let’s Kill Off Marketability
    For all the pushing that occurred to get RFID technology approved by the FCC, this is especially troubling.

    Jamming no matter what is not right. Depending upon how this is ruled upon, the action by RSA may be slightly mooted. The genie may never be put back in the bottle, though, due to how hard such a restriction would be to enforce in practice. Once the plans are out there, anyone can build such on their own presumably and it would be hard to restrict such from occuring.

    If someone could jam an RFID reader, they wouldn’t waste time targeting libraries, would they? I’d expect retail stores or even warehouses to be the entities that worry most about these tags becoming useless.
