Irish Classic Is Still a Hit (in Calfskin, Not Paper)

Somebody writes “New York Times The Book of Kells, the splendidly illustrated Gospels in Latin written 1,200 years ago, is about to undergo laser analysis.
For a manuscript written 1,200 years ago and revered as a wonder of the Western world practically ever since, little is known about the Book of Kells and its splendidly illustrated Gospels in Latin. But the book may be about to surrender a few of its many secrets.”

    I’m all for TCD heck I even have a degree from there, but I wouldn’t make a special trip to see the Book of Kells. If you are in Dublin anyway then go.

    Seeing the book is a self guided tour that does end in the Old Library which is quite interesting.

    If you do go then go just up the block to see the tart with the cart, cross the Liffey to see the floozy in the Jacuzzi and the spike. My favorite Indian restaurant is just a few blocks from the school at about 21 Lower Baggot St.

    There is plenty to do in Dublin, and great things to see around TCD and St. Stephens Green, TCD, museums, The Houses of the Oireachtas, Grafton St, my dentist Celine O’Brien, the White Friars Church a few blocks away where St. Valentine is buried. Marsh’s Library, the oldest Public Library in Ireland is als just a few blocks walk away. Marsh’s library is 306 years old (if I recall correctly) and has a collection of incunabula of which I have been lucky enough to have seen a few volumes.

    So go see the Book of Kells, but save a few days for the other interesting sites in the area.

    I have a friend who bought a facsimile copy of the Book of Kells for $300 in the mid-eighties, after visiting the original. So the paper version is popular too.
