Iowa universities seeking new librarians

Great News (for job hunters) from Iowa, where they are reporting in the next 15 years 60 percent of public librarians will retire. In 2000, “Library Journal” magazine reported that as many as 40 percent of library directors will retire in nine years or less, according to the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

    Great news?
    Gee, how wonderful that I and my fellow Iowa jobseekers only have to wait 6-15 years to get a job…while in current times here in good old Iowa City, people who have their MLS and several years experience apply for Library Assistant positions just to get a foot in the door. I am one of the lucky ones in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids employment market as I have two part-time professional positions that ALMOST add up to one full time job (without benefits! and I can make rent if I work a third part-time job at nights!).

    Great news indeed. Bah. Don’t let my bitterness get you down, though.
