Indiana library may alter policy on religious services

Post-Trib.com reports he Westchester Library Board is rethinking its ban on allowing religious services to be held at the library.

On Thursday, the board voted to temporarily suspend the ban until a new policy could be drafted. The new policy will reflect evolving interpretation of legislation that permits church groups to use “state-funded library facilities.”

    This is certainly consistent with “open access” federal legislation signed into law by President Clinton. If an organization makes its facilities available to outside groups they cannot discriminate against a religious organization. Religious groups should have equal access to public facilities based on same eligibility criteria than other organizations/groups must meet.
