In Vancouver Most Strikers Are Back on the Job, Except Librarians

Can you imagine three months of disposible diapers piling up outside the house? Well thankfully, the strike is over in Vancouver with the exception of 800 librarians, who will hopefully return to work soon. According to this article from CTV, librarians had ‘an informal meeting with city representatives’ today, so maybe an agreement is imminent.

    If you look towards the end of this article you’ll see this one-sentence
    comment:

    “But about 800 librarians have been on the picket line since July. They had
    an informal meeting with city representatives on Monday afternoon.”

    What is evident from this is a few things. First, the reporter and many of
    the public do not recognize that not all people who work in a library are
    librarians. As for our level of education, they’re totally clueless about
    that. I’m referring here to the comment above about Vancouver having “800
    librarians” on strike. Vancouver would be a very rich city indeed if this
    were true. I blame the profession for this. We won’t go into that here
    because that would require a very long essay. Secondly, the fact
    that mention of this ongoing strike is mentioned LAST gives you an indication of the level of importance of a public library strike in the eyes of the civic politicians and the media. Oh, we’ve gotten very little press now even with the garbage thing over!

    No one gives a damn about libraries. No one cares that librarians have to have graduate degrees.

    People want the garbage picked up, they can live just fine without libraries. You want to blame someone blame the librarians that will work for ten dollars an hour. Blame the ALA for marginalizing the profession and championing issues such as Darfur and torture that makes all librarians look like nutjobs.

    Sure those things are important, but the ALA and its cliques, roundtables, SIGs, and divisions need to focus on libraries and librarianship. But they let communists and global warming alarmsists and any other whackjob that wants a bully pulpit to waste the associations valuable time discussing crap when it should be discussing libraries.

    So Vancouver librarians… you want a high paying job? Learn to drive a garbage truck. I think crushing stuff with those big steel jaws in the truck would be cathartic.
