Anonymous Patron writes “If you want a peep show, use your own quarters says First Amendment jurisprudence has become screwed up. Robert Robb says the logical reasoning that gets from the First Amendment’s “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech” to “cities shall provide taxpayer-funded pornography” is, not to make too fine a point of it, nuts.”

    Gee, I thought they WERE my quarters…
    I mean, you know, TAX money and all. Huh, guess I’m going to be getting a bigger refund after all!

    Notice that the basis of Robb’s argument is that: “The First Amendment, properly understood, does not include a right to an audience or someone else paying for your exercise of it.” Goodbye publicly-funded open fora, goodbye libraries?

    Letting the devil in..
    I was always sorry we let computers into the library. From what I’ve noticed over the ten years we’ve been doing it, all Internet access has led to is pure misery and the patrons we’ve attracted are no prize.Our library is struggling but we’ve had to add two new staff positions to maintain the things and additional funds for new computers and software. Nobody on staff gets more than a 3% raise and the book budget is down the toilet. Since hardcore computer users seldom check out books, maybe that’s no loss. Let’s get rid of the books, put in a coffee bar, and stop calling ourselves libraries.
