Rivkah Sass writes “On April 1 we are reopening a renovated library at the Charles B. Washington Branch Library (Omaha Public Library). In addition to the Mayor, various officials, and the all-male chorus of the local high school, Ice-T will provide opening remarks. We thought he would be inspiring to the community and because of his ideas of freedom of expression, a perfect fit for a public library. We’re excited!”

Cop Killer
Ice-T the same person who sang (if one can call it that) “Cop Killer”. You may find the vulgar lyrics here.
Yeah, that will be great. Perhaps they could have some pedophiles too.
There are killers then there are killers
Maybe Ice T isn’t everybody’s idea of a rolemodel. You could always get Don Rumsfeld.
Re:Cop Killer
Have you listened to the Body Count album? Cop Killer is probably the dumbest song on the album. Try “There Goes the Neighborhood” or “KKK Bitch” for some funny, vicious retorts to racism.
And as far as I know, no album has ever jumped off the shelf and touched a little kid’s private parts, so why don’t we keep the hyperbole out of this discussion?
Re:Cop Killer
Not all pedophiles are child molesters, and not all child molesters are pedophiles. Social commentary by purveyors of the youth culture are not “unAmerican” or “unpatriotic” or anarchic.
Re:Cop Killer

I swore I would never tell…
…because…
…but…
I can’t hide it anymore! “Free to Be You and Me” touched me in the bathing suit area.
Re:There are killers then there are killers
Really? I can’t find any Rumsfield lyrics advocating killing police officers?
Oh, you were making a tired attempt at calling Rumsfeld a killer because of his position in our government.
Does that imply that you approve of those who at one time advocated killing police officers giving speeches at the opening of public buildings. How very sad that you find that appropriate.
Re:Cop Killer
Because it is easy to identify as hyperbole and I like it? But if you want you can have Blake delete that part.
No, I never listened to that album, just not to my taste.
Re:Cop Killer
I didn’t write child molesters (actually I did, but I changed it because that was not my meaning).
I wrote that because of the views the people espouse. Ice-T espouses (or espoused) killing police officers, pedophiles espouse (or would if they felt they wouldn’t get the snot beaten out of them by the rest of us) sexual performace by children.
I don’t want either one opening public buildings in my city. We have plenty of dignitaries without resorting to some offensive ersatz musician. I would hope other cities could find someone better as well.
I don’t know your definition of unpatriotic or unAmerican is, but advocating police officers meets that definition in my book, and if killing those entrusted with enforcing our laws at the most basic level is not anarchic I don’t know what is.
Do you want Ice-T at ceremonies in your city?
Re:Cop Killer
This is condemning him for thought crimes. This inidicates a double standard morality. Nobody is trying to get Pat Robertson off the air for espousing the murder of foreign heads of state. Nobody in government did enough when Bush espoused the mass murder of innocent Iraqis, or now that he is espousing the murder of Iranians.
No, that is child molesters. The contexts in which you are using the word pedophile suggests you use the terms interchangeably. Again: Not all pedophiles are child molesters; not all child molesters are pedophiles.
“Want” or “not want” is irrelevant. I would allow him regardless. I do not fear his message. Unlike reactionaries, I make an effort to understand other cultures and subcultures rather than blindly condemn them from ignorance. I would make the effort to subject Ice-T’s message to critical review and adopt or reject it according to its own merits.
And in an free and open society founded on principles of justice, the underlying philosophy should be: If you are going to punish someone you should punish the right person for the right crime. You are looking to punish people for the thoughts they think.
You do know
That Ice-T currently portrays a cop, Detective Fin Tutuola, on Law and Order: SVU?
Personally, I’d rather have Ice-T speak at a library opening than Bush. But that’s just my preference. I would imagine Ice-T is responsible for a lot less deaths than Bush.

Re:Cop Killer
Are people not allowed to change? Cop Killer was on Ice-T’s 1992 Body Count album. That’s 14 years ago. I don’t think that if he still espoused views that cops should be killed that he would have played a cop in at least 1 movie and now on a TV show (where he plays my favorite character).
Again, are people not allowed to change and are to be viewed and judged forever by one action?
Re:Cop Killer
That’s true, you’ve got a number of distinguished citizens in your community. Katherine Harris comes to mind immediately! She’s probably available right now too!
