Hundreds help pass books from old to new library

Now This Sounds Like Fun! People young and old lined up like band members waiting to march in a parade Sunday afternoon, all patiently anticipating the passing of books. They were there to celebrate the opening of the new Delray Beach Public Library on West Atlantic Avenue.

Before Mayor Jeff Perlman cut the red ribbon, a human chain of almost 1,000 people stretched from the old library on Southeast Fourth Avenue to the new. The group passed 55 books for the 55 years the old building served as the library’s home.

People stood for almost one hour an arm’s length apart, like children lined against a gymnasium wall. Many at the end of the line were wondering where the books were. They talked on cell phones, some left for lunch, others chatted with strangers on the street.
