Buffalo News: If Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and many other U.S. presidents can have presidential libraries, why not Buffalo’s Grover Cleveland and Millard Fillmore?
And what better site than the H.H. Richardson complex?
That’s what North Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr. proposes. He envisions a museum that would pay tribute to two of the region’s most famous former residents.
“People travel to visit one presidential library. We could have two located in the same complex,” he said.
The landmark Richardson site is on the grounds of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center near Forest and Elmwood avenues. The state has committed $100 million to restore the building for educational and cultural uses.
Arghhhhhhh
While I would love to see this happen (although as the article pointed out they are not the two most exciting Presidents we have had). If the state can cough up $100 MM for the restoration of the building then perhaps they could find a few bucks to open the Cazenovia or Depew branches of the Erie County Library.
This crap drives me nuts, the money is there but you can’t have it for the library because we are going to spruce up some old building.
Of course the building is of great architectural importance and if I recall Olmstead was involved in the design.
I vaugely remember my mom telling me that the neighbor lady was taken there in the early 70’s because she kept putting her head in the oven… a very strange concept for a five year old. I wondered if her head was cold?
Re:Arghhhhhhh
Maybe if they toss in the assassination of William McKinley as well, they will generate more interest. I realize that there is already a museum for this event in Buffalo but still….
On the other hand, perhaps supporting the library is a better idea.Yep, I’ll go with that one.
