Historical Records

Kathleen writes “The National Historical Publications and Records Commission promotes the preservation and use of America’s documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture. – NHPRC
President Bush proposed eliminating all support for the program this year.
An intense lobbying campaign by historians and archivists appears to be paying off, however, and there is now optimism that the NHPRC, as it is called, will survive. Members of a House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee reported that just about all the mail they have received about the budget for the National Archives and Records Administration. And at a recent hearing on the Archives’ budget, members of Congress from both parties referred to what they have heard about the commission and its importance.
The NATIONAL COALITION FOR HISTORY is a non-profit educational organization comprised of over nearly 70 history and archival organizations that advances historical and archival programs in government and throughout the nation. It is working with the
Humanities Advocacy Network to lobby for restored funding.”
