Google’s Impact on the Internet [and libraries]

Anonymous Patron writes “Here’s a neat Slashdot Thread (and +5 Comments on Google. They point to 2 articles, one from The Globe & Mail and the other over at Fortune.

The Globe & Mail says Google Scholar raises questions about the future of bricks and mortar libraries and, more widely, about the library model itself and the role Google will play in such a future. (Surely not relevant ads in library books?)”

    Libraries must become online publishers
    I can’t speak to public libraries, but it is absolutely clear what academic libraries must do: They must become publishers. The logic works like this: Academic libraries serve the purpose of providing information services in the interest of higher education. Over the past few years, we have migrated to a model where the content is not stored in the library anymore, it is stored on servers maintained by publishers who charge us for access to the content (that was originally produced at our universities anyway.) We have to get the content back into the libraries by providing publishing services to the academic community. These services would include publishing peer-reviewed journals (open access or not), e-monographs, e-print archives, tech-reports, special collections digitization, and even assisting in the development of new publishing paradigms. My personal feeling is that the academic library (and the values it represents) will be disintermediated if we don’t do this.

    Thanks for the link, I will check it out!

    I also forgot to tie in Google to the “Libraries as publishers” vision. The point is, if libraries are hosting the content Google (or fill in the blank with any search engine or index) will point to it. Google does not host actual content, it just points people in the right direction. We need to have Google pointing to libraries.
