Google Trounces Other Free E-mail Services

Information Week has an interesting review of Gmail by Matthew Fordahl. There are, inarguably, some great features, like one Gigabyte of storage, a search function, and the ability to categorize and archive. While that all sounds intriguing, Matt says Gmail is no better than the others when it comes to filtering spam, and it doesn’t play well with Outlook or Eudora. But with all that space, perhaps Google’s Gmail could be like a virtual vaccuum cleaner that will suck up and hoard all the spam on the internet. It’s hard to imagine one whole Gigabyte of email space, though, when one is so used to, and quite satisfied with, the few tiny megabytes offered by Hotmail or Yahoo. Exactly how much email do people save? I have to admit, I’m a purge and destroy kind of person… and always a skeptic… But, one whole Gigabyte? Read the Review.

    Ok. I’ve got the perfect reason to use GMAIL. First I’ll turn off the spam filter. Then I get to archive all my spam. I wonder how long it would take before the whole Gigabyte would be used up.

    Then I’d wonder how long it would take before my account would get deleted.

    Lets see, geographically they’d be able to profile me. But they wouldn’t be able to find what my interests were, or what kind of products I buy. Or who my friends are. Or what kind of conspiracies I’d be planning.

    Did anyone catch the link to the GMAIL privacy policy?

    I’ve been trying it.
    I actually like it. Then again, I don’t actually believe I have all that much privacy online anyway. My favorite thing is the way the conversations are threaded. I haven’t cataloged my mail yet, but I think that’s a cool feature. I’m constantly deleting stuff in hotmail. Here I just let it go.
