Somebody writes “BostonHerald.com — Technology: Google’s book-scanning efforts trigger philosophical debate“From the article: ” The latest tensions revolve around Google’s insistence on chaining the digital content to its Internet-leading search engine and the nine major libraries that have aligned themselves with the Mountain View-based company.
A splinter group called the Open Content Alliance favors a less restrictive approach to prevent mankind’s accumulated knowledge from being controlled by a commercial entity, even if it is a company like Google that has embraced “Don’t Be Evil” as its creed.”

    Interesting excerpt from the article
    I would have thought the most interesting part of that AP article was the $1 million Sloan grant to Internet Archive for OCA scanning…

    Although labeling the Open Content Alliance a “splinter group” is pretty interesting in its own right! Let’s see: Google all by itself is the mainstream; sixty partners including the world’s largest software company and a web company with larger visitor numbers than Google constitute a “splinter group.” That’s some spin on the reporter’s part.

    well, Brewster Kahle is an idealist with no profit motive, so automatically anything he drives becomes a splinter group.
