Google adds new twist to publishing

The Financial Times takes a look at the Google Library. Google’s library initiative is turning the pages too fast for some. While many of the books are in the public domain, others being scanned are still under copyright and Google is riding roughshod over rights holders, according to critics of the scheme. Adam Smith, senior product manager for Google Print, says it is working closely with publishers as it develops the service.
Both Google and Yahoo are seeking to expand their appeal to users by making more material searchable that is inaccessible, either because it is in an offline format or hidden behind password-protected databases in the “deeper web”.
