George Orwell’s 1984 and the Ministry of Reshelving Project

Chris Whittington writes “An article in Slate, “Shelving 101,” (last article on page) describes Avant Game blogster and game designer Jane McGonigal’s “Ministry of Reshelving Project,” in which participants go to bookstores, remove copies of George Orwell’s “1984” from the fiction or literature section, and reshelve them in the “‘Current Events”, “Politics”, “History”, “True Crime”, or “New Non-Fiction'” sections,leaving notecards explaining the transfer. As reported in Slate, not everyone has been pleased.

    What a bunch of … well you can fill in whatever pejorative term you wish. That is a brilliant idea; make life harder for some minimum wage bookstore clerk so you can make what you perceive as witty social commentary.

    Every day I see another group for whom a good beat down would do wonders.

    At least they know what Godwin’s Law is.

    This is interesting,
    I’m agreeing with you for once. I know, I was surprised myself. Frankly these guys sound like attention mongers. Its not like the powers that be will go into the book store, see 1984 in current events, and have a Road to Damascus-style conversion. “1984? In current events? My God what have we done?”

    Positive change comes from a fundamental effort to be active, rather then activist. Feeling peevish about the war? Volunteer to help at a vet’s hospital. Worried about the children over there? Gather money for a shoe drive.
