From the reference desk to the bar

Watts writes “Given that last week had an entry about “from the bar to the reference desk” thought going the reverse route might be interesting. Although it’s a different kind of bar. Premiering next Sunday on TLC, an episode of “Faking It” has a librarian try her hand at being the newest drinks server at a branch of Coyote Ugly.”

    Here we go again
    Why do people think that we are square, dull, and timid? Such an outing only adds to the long list of stereotypes that have plagued us for years. There was a movie about a gun in a librarian’s handbag. In the classic Its a Wonderful Life Mary becomes a spinster librarian. Will it ever end?
    People forget that Mao was a librarian. Although these programs seem cute I don’t think you would find a doctor, lawyer, accountant, etc. doing a stint at Coyote Ugly. (Unless they were drunk)
    Anyone remember on the old Buck Rogers series (Gil Gerard not Buster Crabbe) there was an episode where a hired assassin was previously a librarian.

    Perhaps it isn’t that they see librarians as dull and square, just that this particular person they are featuring happens to be shy and unassuming and wants to experience a different lifestyle. ALL of the “Faking It” shows have been like that–last week it was a cowboy in a small town in Colorado who went to LA to be a hairstylist. He was also shy and appeared very awkard in the big city–but I didn’t think that they were slamming cowboys or people from small towns in that episode.
