Free Software Book

There is a new book out called Free Software for Busy People. The book is recommended by Eric Raymond the author of The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Raymond’s book is a major book in the free software literature. In the busy people book there are several characters the author created and he shows how each one can use open source software. The characters are:

M. Braille is working for an educational charity in Ghana. He knows that Ghana is one of the better governed African countries. His French charity operates a primary school.

Mrs Shrub is the mayor of London. Intelligent, ambitious and charismatic, she wants to cut the costs and increase the accessibility of government services.

Dr Digitalis is a general practitioner (GP) who has spent the last two years on sabbatical in China researching into and training in Chinese medicine. She knows that her combination of Western and Chinese medical skills will become highly sought after by British patients, so she sets up a private clinic in London’s Harley Street.

Mr Sala Al-Din is a history teacher in a private high-school in Bahrain. This Arab country is a small island state in the Persian Gulf. It has recently begun democratic elections and its economy is based on the banking and education sectors.

Ms Yates is an entrepreneur. A few years ago she saw a businessman struggling to write on his handheld computer. She had an idea for a better stylus for the writing so she quit her job to focus on the design, production and sale of this product.

Mr Big is the CEO of a Fortune 500 hotel company. The company froze all investments in IT since 1999, when it had had to upgrade all its computers for Year 2000 (Y2K) compliance. He knows another round of upgrades is due within the next 18 months.
