Fortunate Coincidence in Vienna

Last week I had the good fortune to accompany my husband on a business trip to Vienna, and when we arrived on Thursday, we took a stroll through the center of town in a attempt to walk off our jet lag. Heading down the Josefsplatz towards the Court Palace of Franz Josef and the Museum District, we happened upon a truck with a platform crane lift, and standing on it, surrounded by a few photographers, a distinguished looking woman about 50′ up in the air.

Turns out the woman was Dr. Johanna Rachinger, Generaldirektorin of the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek. The crane etc. was for the purpose of a photograph for a new brochure for the National Library (in front of which she is standing) , and when Dr. Rachinger descended, she allowed me to take her picture too. Descending from the platform, Dr. Rachinger was greeted with the traditional bouquet.

We spoke briefly about how she has enjoyed visiting her counterpart at the Library of Congress and other stateside libraries. For additional information on the Library, here’s the website in German, and here’s info in English.
